Curing hearing impairment?
summitvessel asked:
Does anyone know if there is a cure for hard of hearing people? Forget hearing aids of cochlear implants. I mean a way to actually cure any hearing problems and make the hearing as good as new?

I got a cochlear implant a few years ago. It’s not perfect. But together with hearing aids, it’s the best we have at the moment. Be sure however what the cause of the hard hearing is: if it is not caused by the nerve, other reasons like a simple ear button, a disease of the hearing bones etc may cause the problem. These are perfectly curable.

Create a video blog…instantly.
If the nerve is destroied, there are no chance to get better. My daugther has a little bit of hearing loss, 20%, and I made all the investigation posible. I found out in a chinesse natural site, that say, if you have hearing loss it might be because of kidney problem. I bougth this product , but she did not use it yet, ER LONG ZUO CI WAN from activeherb.com, and go to shop by concern.
I am stil looking for answers, another site : mychaga.com
I am a member there, I want to try this product, I have it for a week already.
But acording to the doctors, there is no cure.
Good luck to you, and let me know if you find anything.

Sorry there is no cure for hearing loss yet. Yes Cochlear implants are the best option for severe hearing loss. They have recently relaxed the criteria for cochlear implant candidacy in order to allow more people with significant hearing loss not getting good results from hearing aids the opportunity to reap the benefits of cochlear implants. With a cochlear implant the hearing test results are often in the “normal” range although hearing is not normal and it does take a lot of aural rehabilitation and many visits to audiologist to get used the implant and learn how you can get the most benefit from it. The improvements made with cochlear implants in the recent years is phenomenal. The great thing about them also is that you can get one implant. This allows you to “save” the other ear for future improvements in technology.
Someday there may be a cure for hearing loss, and I am hopeful it will be sometime in my lifetime (I am 26 with hearing loss), but it is still a VERY long way off. There is research being done on hair cell regeneration in the ear using stem cells. The hearing nerve is hard to study as it is housed in the hardest bone in the body the temporal bone. It is also very complex. Although they may be able to regenerate hair cells how do you find out what people will benefit from it? Hearing loss is manisfested in so many ways. Conductive vs Sensory vs Neural. It is fairly easy to determine conductive vs sensorineural. But sensorineural hearing loss can be a problem in the inner ear due to several problems including lack of hair cells or a nerve problem or both. It can be difficult to figure out. I will certainly be keeping my ears open for developments myself as it would truly be a big medical breakthrough that could potentially help so many people.
