But once when I was in 6th grade, a bunch of 8th graders came up to me and made fun of me in-front of the whole middle school kids. Most of them didn’t laugh, actually, most of them were upset as them. But soon I’m going to High school. My problem is that will people judge me and will pick on me?
PigletLikesPancakes asked:

I’m 18 years old, and have been thinking a lot about hearing aids. I am about 95% deaf in my left ear, and 35% in my right ear. I’ve been in normal public school, play music, and talk all right, which is what causes most to think my hearing doesn’t affect me. Really, they’re wrong. I struggle to hear in school, always have to sit on the left side of whatever I’m trying to hear, TVs are damn near impossible to hear sometimes (captions are my best friend), and all in all it’s just annoying. I’m used to it, though. I don’t notice it most of the time. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect me negatively.

My twin sister and I were a month premature. She was the fat, healthy one, and I had a shitload of problems (heart murmur, low on iron (grandpa had to donate blood), freakishly fast heartbeat, etc. I was in the hospital for a month, blah.

Anyway, they never did any hearing tests during that time, so we don’t know if it happened then, but the doctor reckons that it probably was. Despite the fact that I naturally learned not to lay on my right ear when I was trying to watch TV and use my right ear for the phone, no one ever connected it until I got one of those shitty raise-your-hand tests in kindergarten.

I took a test in ‘98, and retook it in 2005 when I was 14 (I barely saw these results about 2 months ago, my mom never showed me them until then). It’d gotten worse by about 20% in each ear. I never thought about it until recently, but I’m worried it could just get worse.

My mom told me that it is damaged nerve endings that cause my deafness. Apparently, the ONEEE doctor that I saw said that there was nothing I can do. Hearing aids wouldn’t help. Blah. My mom took his word right away and told me that was it. I haven’t been able to get her to take me anywhere else for more opinions, and I know (for sure) that it is simply because she doesn’t want to spend money on it.

I’m 18 now, but still live with her and haven’t a job yet (college). I want to go to the doctor again, but want to hear some public opinion. I know it doesn’t replace a doctor’s words, but I just want to know if there is anyone out there with a similar situation.

Any information would help.

- Piglet
Thank you so much. I think I’m going to talk to my mom about taking me to see another doctor. All your advice has been helpful.

hearing aids

Blood Angel asked:

Well I recently bought a Motorola cell phone, the i425 from Boost Mobile, because they said it was hearing aid compatible. But when I try to use it, all I get is a bunch of static and noises coming from the cell phone itself. I figured out I can’t use a Razor, or one piece phones like the iPhone or Black Berry. It needs to be a flip phone, but finding one that isn’t going to interfere with my hearing aid is hard, so I’m hoping someone here knows a few models that do work with hearing aids.
