Is there anything out there that acts like the opposite of a hearing aid (blocks out sound)?

clarkkevin90 asked:

I switched to the graveyard shift at my job and work from 11pm to 7am.

I live with 2 roommates who, like most normal people, are active during the day.

When I get home, I try to sleep, but then I hear them get up and make breakfast, walk around for a bit and watch TV, then they come home in the afternoon for lunch, etc.

I am a VERY light sleeper, to the point I will hear the door open in anyone comes in. So naturally, I am constantly being woken up and go to work tired. I can’t ask them to be any quieter than they are–I’m just too sensitive.

Is there anything out there that works well to block out sound? I was told to use earplugs, but I don’t think those would work that well. In 2008, do we have anything that is basically the opposite of a hearing aid that repels sound, or even some soundproof earmuffs or what? Any products out there that can help me catch some rest?

I have been using regular foam earplugs for years to help me sleep and they work great! They block out everything short of a bomb going off and they are comfortable. I like the tapered ones:

Noise canceling headphones are not designed for silence, they are designed to listen to music and block out outside sounds. They would not work and who wants to wear headphones to bed?
