Requirements for getting a hearing aid?
siropson asked:
Hi does anyone know if there are requirements for getting a hearing aid? like how much loss, what if its just one ear, are there other things they can do besides a hearing aid? I have significant hearing loss in my left ear from childhood ear infections and it seems to be getting worse lately. A friend really thinks i should see an audiologist and think about a hearing aid….

There are no requirments for getting a hearing aid. I have been wearing them since I was a preteen. See your ENT doc first to be sure there is nothing more they can do help your hearing surgically and then see an audiologist. I am surprised you have waited this long to get your hearing taken care of.

Your friend is right. You should be tested by an audiologist, maybe also see an ENT specialist if it’s getting worse without obvious cause. The only requirement for a hearing aid is that you have hearing loss significant enough to cause you issues. You can get an aide for 1 or both ears. Many health insurances do not help with $. But check yours it might. Also some states have trial period requirements, Like you can return it for a full refund in 14, or 30 days, if you aren’t satisfied. Check reg. in your area. Any reputable hearing aide store can help with testing, talking to your health ins. co., and telling you about trial periods.

First thing you need to do is get a full audiogram to figure out the extent and nature of your loss. There are two different kinds of hearing loss — nerve (sensorineural) and conductive. If the loss is indeed from ear infections a) it is likely the loss is conductive, b) there may be surgical options that will correct conductive loss and c) there are some hearing aids that are used specifically for conductive loss that are different than for sensorineural loss, though most sensorineural hearing aids also work for conductive loss.
