What’s the best medicine to cure my hearing loss?

Kennet T asked:

I recently have acquired a cold, sore throat, and excessive coughing. I took Claritin, and a shot of Nyquil every night for the past 5 days. It has started to go away, but 3 days ago my ear started to stop up. Me, thinking I know how to cure it, I bought an ear-wax removal kit thinking that will help. It only made it worse. I took it and then my ear became completely stopped up. A couple of hours later, I went to CVS and bought ear drops that are supposed to cure an ear infection due to a cold. I thought that would work, but did nothing. So, now I sit with a stopped up ear, and I think it is due to allergies. But I think I have made it worse by putting all these drops in my ear. Does anyone know of how I can open up my ear WITHOUT going to a doctor, because I have 0% insurance, and can’t afford it. Please help, I am going crazy!!!

There is a tube that runs from your ear to the back of your throat. It is plugged with snot. When snot gets in there, the ears will not equalize pressure, and your hearing will suffer, the ear will feel stopped up, it hurts, etc. The main cure will be when your body completely recovers from the cold, but here are some things you can try to relieve the ear:

    1. Take cold medicine with a decongestant like Sudafed

    2. Stand in a hot shower. High humidity sometimes help.

    3. Drink warm brandy (any hard liquor will do, but I have the best luck with brandy), the warm alcohol will help loosen up the snot.

    4. The spray up your nose type cold medicine like Afrin. This one only has about 3 days before its effectiveness wears off. May not work anyways, but worth a shot.

    5. Buy a nasal saltine solution at the drug store, and squirt it up your nose evey couple of hours. This will help drain some of the snot also.

If you really think allergies are doing it, you can do all of them except #1. One last suggestion: if you can, do NOT blow your nose. Everytime you do, you’re pushing the snot deeper into the tube, or putting more of it in there.

    Good luck.
